SUGGESTED INFECTION CONTROL PRODUCTS FOR H1N1
|
|
H1N1, like most influenza viruses, is spread by droplet transmission via coughing, sneezing, talking; or direct hand to mouth contact from contaminated surfaces. Viruses can also be transmitted via mucous membranes of the mouth, nose and eyes.
- Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette should be enforced
- All respiratory secretions and bodily fluids, including emesis and feces, are considered to be potentially infectious
Standard Precautions Should be Followed: (1)
- Stringent hand-hygiene to avoid transfer of microorganisms
- Gloves should be used if there is a risk of touching body fluids or contaminated items
- Gowns should be worn to protect skin and prevent contamination of clothing
- Medical/surgical face masks should be worn by people entering the room, or those within six feet of the patient
- Eye protection is recommended
Airborne Precautions - Prioritization of Respiratory protection (N95 respirators or higher): (1)
- Additional precautions are recommended for aerosol-generating procedures including:
- Bronchoscopy
- Sputum induction
- Intubation and extubation
- Open suctioning
- CPR (resuscitation)
- Autopsies
- Fit-tested N95 respirators for all people entering the room
